You have decided that you want to pursue a career in education. You probably already know that your options reach beyond just teaching positions, but you also know that most education careers require a bachelor degree.
You want to be sure that the bachelor degree you earn will be beneficial to your career in education. Here are a few tips to help you achieve that goal:
Take subjects that can be used in all aspects of the education field. For example, business management courses can help you obtain a job in the administrative area of education. Psychology courses can prepare you for working with special needs students or those with emotional or mental problems who are “mainstreamed” (attend regular classes), but require additional help in those classes. Don’t discount or ignore science or medical courses. Any of these can enable you to do anything from teaching biology or other science courses to again working with special needs students.
While you are still in high school, join clubs that are designed for students considering an education career. These include such organizations as “Future Teachers of America” and others. Not only will these give you opportunities to learn more about education, but having been part of them will look good on your college application when you’re ready to start earning your bachelor degree.
Take advantage of teaching opportunities outside the school or college classroom. These can include such things as tutoring or working with children in a religious organization. They can also include things as working at summer camps or after-school programs.
